When one man, for whatever reason, has the opportunity to lead an extraordinary life, he has no right to keep it to himself.
When I saw an airfare from Tunisia to Vietnam flying a combination of Air France and China Southern (both for the first time!), with the possibility of an extended stopover in Paris for £650 per person, round trip - I booked instantly. No questions asked.
There's a lot to like about Garuda as an airline but one thing is abundantly clear. The Business Class is so good that First feels slightly disappointing in comparison.
The tableware, hot towels, food, drink and amenity kit are almost identical between the two products. The IFE is just as antiquated in both cabins and is well overdue for an upgrade. I found the service to be professional and well intentioned but somewhat lacking in warmth. The crew didn't go out of their way to make proactive suggestions or engage in conversation in the way that I've encountered on JAL, ANA, Cathay or Singapore - airlines which are natural competitors for Garuda.
I had high hopes for this lounge. Garuda are regarded as one of the best airlines in the world and are famed for their ground services. Having a PA throughout the pre-departure process is fantastic but once you get to the lounge it all starts to unravel quickly...
As an Accor platinum, a stay here offers fantastic value. If you ask nicely and capacity permits, I'm sure you'll get one of the modern club rooms too. Even with the basic room, the club lounge and gym definitely make this a hotel I'd return to if I didn't want to splash out on a luxury hotel.
Overall this was one of my best ever hotel stays. The staff were a huge part of this. Despite this being a 5*hotel, the service managed to be proactive and friendly without any stuffiness or excess formality at all. The most formal people were those behind desks at reception downstairs and in the main lobby, even they would always grin and greet you with a a wai whenever you walked past.
The Sofitel was my first ever experience of staying in a full blown mega-resort. Having club access definitely helped to make the experience feel more personalised but much like the experience of staying in villas without staff, I genuinely feel that choosing places like this means that you miss the best that Bali has to offer.
For a quick overnight stay, this property is absolutely ideal. I would definitely not classify this as a luxury hotel however, the room decor leaves a lot to be desired and the harsh clinical feel of the white walls and bathroom tiles do not make you want to spend a great deal of time in your room.
