After 24 hours enjoying the sights and food of the beautiful, wintry city of Montreal it was finally time to step into SWISS' all new B777 First Class cabin. I was so happy to be able to plan the trip in a way that let me try the older A330 product beforehand as it meant I could finish on a real high note.
As soon as I approached the jetbridge I was greeted by the smiling crew, "Welcome back, leaving so soon?" they said as I stepped into reception area and made my way left to seat 2K. Not only had I selected the exact same seat for my return, I'd managed to get the exact same crew too! The scientific, analytical part of my mind immediately filled with joy as a I realised that I had the perfect control for my comparison of the two different SWISS products 😁
Modern, thoughtful design featuring ample power sockets, a variety of different seating options and abundant natural light. This lounge is a genuinely pleasant place to sit and relax in, or indeed charge your devices and get some work done...
I came away from my first W experience pleasantly surprised in some ways. The doormen were excellent as were the room service and bar staff. They were universally friendly and proactive, really going out of their way to provide excellent service...
As an overall experience, flying in SWISS First was absolutely fantastic. The lounge in Zurich may well be my favourite in the world and the service on board was close to perfect. The food was extremely well executed and presented. Indeed the table setting was basically indistinguishable from that of a restaurant, no miniature or plastic pieces of tableware in sight. Most importantly the bed was very comfortable and I managed a deep sleep in the middle of the day without any problems.
Unfortunately the bed in the 744 is not 100% flat, the foot rest sags and you do end up sliding a bit. I usually have trouble sleeping on planes and this flight was no exception. I ended up just watching movies for a few hours whilst everybody else slept.
On the plus side, this meant I was awake to see the epic sunrise
Overall, the experience with Qantas was mixed. The crew are very helpful and friendly. They have their wits about them and behave like competent, experienced adults. With some other airlines you get younger crews who may look better but you get the feeling that their ability to improvise, go the extra mile or even engage in decent conversation is somewhat limited.
My seat was in the first row of the mini-cabin (19A), which could have meant extra noise from the galley. I had a feeling this wouldn't be a problem on CX, an airline renowned for the quality of the in flight service (I was right). The benefit is that you get an extra large foot cubby!
The service on this flight was ferociously good. I felt like I didn't have a care in the world. Everything was brought to me as soon as I needed it. Sometimes the FAs would proactively suggest a coffee or a snack before I myself had realised I wanted it.
The seat is obscenely large and comfortable in every position I tried it. The IFE had a huge selection and a decent screen too. The headphones sounded crystal clear and no cabin noise leaked through.
It is borderline ridiculous how good this flight was. I cannot wait to fly CX F long haul next year and am delighted to say that I just got my parents booked in on a CX F redemption too. I feel like everybody needs to experience this at least once.
